april 24: ct-reuse project released: ct-reuse (nemo 031) re·use (r-yz) tr.v. re·used, re·us·ing, re·us·es. to use again, especially after salvaging or special treatment or processing. [thefreedictionary.com]. truer words could not have been said for this the 31st release of the world wide web experimental music community, ct-collective. the idea for reuse began one day when i was awaiting the train, holding a plastic drink cup and subconsciously moving the straw about its cover making the familiar 'squeaky' sound. i had just recently participated in the ct-collective project ct-generative and wanted to lead a project. i thought why not do a recording of music produced entirely from things we often throw away and thus reuse was born. (jim goodin, brooklyn, ny). download and listen for free here.

october 18: ct-nature project released. the description for this project was to make a composition that reflects our natural environment or wilderness - things that have not been substantially altered by human intervention. the project was initiated and coordinated by me. listen and download here.
october 6: "strictly secret and confidential" instructions for the guidance of "electrical engineers and recording operators". this fascinating instruction manual dates from april 1930, a year before the merger with the gramophone company to form emi, in 1931. little comment is required except to say that such expeditions were just that. imagine transporting heavy recording equipment together with a large supply of equally heavy wax blanks to say 1930s cairo. with the most unreliable of electricity supplies, lack of back-up support if machinery malfunctioned, we really cannot imagine what it was like. and yet these intrepid engineers recorded thousands of 'local' sides in what still today is very good sound. link to manual.
september 8: blind photographer shoots for sound.(vilnius, lithuania). remigijus audiejaitis is a photographer with little use for the intricacies of the craft. when he shoots a picture there's no concern about lighting or whether the f-stop is correct. what's important to him is the sound his subjects make, whether it's the laugh of a shop girl or the backfiring of a muffler on the city streets or the clinking of coffee mugs. audiejaitis, a photographer for four years, couldn't adjust for poor lighting. he's been blind since birth. "i take my automatic camera out when i hear something interesting happening around me," the 30-year-old photographer told the associated press this week. despite the obvious shortcoming, audiejaitis's lack of sight has not dampened his desire to take photos. he uses a kodak advantix 2000 he purchased a while ago. it's fully automatic, so there's no concern about being out of focus. instead of the viewfinder, he uses the mind's eye to gauge what he hears and then decides whether to shoot or not. "i picture rich sounds and my friends develop the film and sort the best images," he said. audiejaitis, who is studying japanese at vilnius university, has staged several exhibitions in the city's capital, drawing more than just the curious to see view the pictures. those images focus on the daily life of vilnius, a 700-year-old city rich with tradition and a deft blend of the old and new: rattling old cars, shouting merchants, and snowplows scraping the pavement with huge shovels in winter.
august 1: ct-zodiac project released. the inspiration for this project was the signs of the zodiac. the idea seemed to promise strong themes, formed a coherent set, and required suitable numbers of contributors. Ronny arrived just too late, but he luckily discovered a 13th sign, so he made it in the end. as ever, we each interpreted the sign in our own special ways. listen and download here.
july 7: pure music and pure dance. "we try to bring people the real pureness, the brightness, and what is really righteous and true,", link.
june 29: bombarding electrons with sound to make them visible" a free electron repels the atoms that surround it, creating a small space, or bubble, around itself. in conventional liquids, the bubble shrinks to nothing because the surface tension of the liquid works against the repulsive force. superfluid helium has very little surface tension, so the bubble can become much larger. the two opposing forces balance when the diameter of the bubble is about 40 angstroms - still far to tiny to see."
"the researchers used a planar transducer - basically, a loudspeaker that produces flat, not focused, sound waves - to pummel the whole volume of liquid helium with sound. as each wave overtook an electron bubble, it alternately increased and decreased the surrounding pressure. under negative pressure, the bubbles expanded to about eight microns, the size of a small speck of dust, then shrank again as the next wave of high pressure washed over them. a strobe light, synchronized to the sound pulse, illuminated the bubbles without overheating the chamber." video and full article here.
june 1:sound immersion. hear sounds above, and behind you using regular headphones.(who says you need to buy surround sound?). link.

august 22: my 'interpretation' of the preparation days of rinus van alebeeks soundroom at mälardalens university last may will be included in the programme of the happening the happening is 4 days, site specific, performance & sound installation mixing live improvised music, recorded compositions, sound sculptures, poetry, artist's interventions, large group compositions and audience participation. the event would utilise the specific architecture of the space, blurring the boundaries between performance, artistic exploration and participation. by relating to the physical space as a big soundboard and the individual rooms as sound chambers within this sound box, the space itself would become a resonating instrument. a series of 'events', each of them unique, would be introduced in individual rooms and over the 4 days, these would create and present an ever-changing programme. location: the basement, 10 - 16 aswin st. london e8. 6th - 9th september 16 - 22 pm. free.
august 14: a cd titled 'unsafe sonic art' with submitted soundworks (including my short piece) for the second annual unsafe festival in poole, uk is released. from the linernotes: soundworks that take risks artistically, aesthetically. philosophically, sonically, even physically. works that should carry a health warning, that ignore safety margins, that lie outside the comfort zone. works that challenge the listener - but also the sound artist. works that may be radical, unusual, subversive, awkward, exciting - but above all, interesting.
